Frequently Asked Questions about Money Transfers to an Account

What do you need to transfer money to a bank account?

Whether you’re sending money via credit1 card to a bank account or using cash at a Western Union agent location, to make an international money transfer you need the following details from your receiver:

    • Full name
    • Country
    • Bank name
    • Bank Account or IBAN (International Bank Account Number)

How long does a money transfer take?

The transfer time depends on the country you want to transfer money to. In many cases, it is 1-3 business days3. Depending on the country and our partners, your money transfer may even arrive on the same day or take more than 3 days.

Tip: We will always show you the estimated transfer time for each payment and receiving method and each destination country in the transfer overview.

How much does it cost to transfer money with Western Union?

Our transfer fees2 vary depending on the destination country, money transfer amount, and payout method. Use our online price estimator to see how much it could cost to transfer money to your receiver online – including the transfer fees2 and transfer total – with no obligation.

How can I transfer money quickly?

The time it takes to transfer money depends on the payment and receiving methods and the receiver’s country. The quickest way to send money is often a transfer with cash pickup at a location — this way, the money reaches the receiver in minutes3. Send money online or with the Western Union® app for cash pickup.

When you send money online, you can easily see the expected delivery times in the transfer overview: Once you have entered the transfer amount and the payment and receiving methods, you will see the estimated time next to “Delivery time”.

Tip: If you want to transfer money to a bank account, please note that the transfer time depends on the payment method: Depending on the destination country, your money may arrive faster if you pay with Klarna or a debit/credit card1 than with a conventional bank transfer.

How much money can I transfer?

The amount of money you can transfer in a single transfer or within a specific period of time depends on identity verification, payment and receiving methods and destination country:

    1. You can send up to EUR 1000 within 3 days before we need to verify your identity.
    2. Once your identity has been verified, we will automatically increase your transfer limit to EUR 5000, and for some pay-in methods up to EUR 50,000. Please note that it may take up to three days to adjust the limit.
    3. You will always see the maximum transfer limit on the transfer screen as soon as you select the country of the receiver on our send money page.
